Give it Some Juice

Do you think you might not have spliced the wiring harness correctly during your last engine swap? It’s a little known fact that electrical demons are the primary cause of premature male pattern baldness. If you want to keep your curly locks and sanity, then the best approach to solving electrical problems is with a digital multi-meter and a cool head. Check your car battery to make sure you’re getting full power. Although car batteries are rated at 12 volts, a healthy one will read between 12.8 and 14 volts when measuring directly from the battery. It is especially important to check this if you think your starters failing. Do you have sensors telling you there’s something wrong? Maybe your cruise control switch doesn’t seem to be working. Check the fusebox to see if you blew a fuse or relay. Fuses are easy to check, but relays usually take two people; one to hit the switch and another to listen to the relay to see if it makes a clicking sound. If it doesn’t click, you found the problem.

Emissions & Exhaust

Rusty mufflers and busted catalytic converters got you down? If your smog equipment isn’t doing its job, you’ll be stinking up the streets and freeways, causing you to get flagged down by the local PD. And if Al Gore’s right, you could even be killing off baby penguins and polar bears in the process, so make sure you keep your vehicles exhaust system compliant with your local smog regs. The basic things to look for; a catalytic converter that doesn’t clank when you drive, an EGR valve that is actually connected to your intake manifold and a smog pump that pushes fresh air into your exhaust manifold. If these three things are up to par, then you’re doing your part to save the baby penguins.

Make it Stop

Over the life of your car, your brakes will take a beating. Since they are an integral part to driving safely, don’t skimp out on performing regular maintenance. Change out that brake fluid and put on a new set of OEM quality brake pads & brake shoes. Ensure your anti lock brakes still work by performing some controlled emergency stops. Another good thing to do is tighten up the parking brake cable to ensure your car stays put when parked. And if you want to really improve your braking experience, maybe even stop a little faster, try updating those brake calipers and rotors; OEM or performance flavors are available.

Keep it Cool

Let’s face it: they don’t make’em like the used to. If your car is from the 80’s or 90’s, chances are you’re going to need to replace some automotive belts soon. Take a look under the hood to make sure they are not already glazed over or fraying; if they are, they could fail on you soon, especially if you live in a hot spot that causes excessive under-the-hood temps to occur. Ensure everything is running cool by giving your engine bay a new cooling fan and idler. And make sure to prepare for the summertime heat by giving your AC parts a quick tune up. If your air conditioning isn’t doing its job, it might just need some new Freon to cool the incoming air. If you’ve recently replaced your Freon, then check out the AC condenser or the AC evaporator to make sure they’re up to snuff. If it’s neither of those, then you’ll want to check the AC compressor to make sure it’s running at full steam.

Headlights and tail lights are the T&A of auto parts. If you’ve got a cracked headlight, you’ve got some serious visibility problems.
