The 2010 Nissan Lineup: Charting the Changes
Tuesday, November 24, 2009
Posted by: Matt

While many manufacturers continue to dial back on their product development activities, Nissan continues strong into the 2010 model year with the introduction of the all-new 370Z Roadster and additional refinement of popular Nissan vehicles such as the Altima, Sentra, Versa, Armada and Rogue. These changes, of course, are in addition to the late 2009 model year introductions of the dramatic Nissan cube®, which went on sale in May, and the June debut of the new NISMO 370Z.

Following is a brief overview of the changes, refinements and enhancements to the complete 2010 Nissan lineup. Full information and specifications on each vehicle will be available, as always, closer to each model’s on-sale date.

2010 NISSAN SPORTS CARS

Nissan’s potential pair of iconic sports cars continues to grab headlines for the 2010 model year with the early introduction (March 2009) of the revised GT-R and the ongoing expansion of the Nissan Z® stable.

After winning near universal acclaim in its rookie year, including being named Motor Trend “2009 Car of the Year,” Automobile magazine’s 2009 “Automobile of the Year” and winning a Kelly Blue Book’s kbb.com “2009 Best Resale Value Award,” the GT-R supercar gains five additional horsepower for 2010, along with standard front seat-mounted and roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags.

The all-new 370Z Roadster joins the GT-R, the all-new-for-2009 370Z Coupe and newly introduced 2009 NISMO 370Z in late summer – creating a veritable “fantastic four” of affordable, high-performance sports cars. Details on each vehicle follow.

2010 Nissan GT-R
After completely changing the paradigm of supercar design and performance in its first year of availability in North America, the affordable, “anyone, anytime, anywhere” Nissan GT-R returns for its sophomore year with an enhanced 2010 model featuring a number of small yet important updates – including five additional horsepower, a revised suspension, revised wheel finishes and standard front seat-mounted and roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags.

The 2010 Nissan GT-R is available now through nearly 700 official “GT-R certified” Nissan dealers across the United States. The names and locations of local GT-R Certified Nissan dealers are available to consumers on NissanUSA.com.

Revisions for 2010 include:

* 5 additional horsepower, raising the horsepower rating of the GT-R’s 3.8-liter twin turbo V6 engine to 485 hp (from 480 hp)
* New Transmission Control Module (TCM) programming for the high-performance 6-speed dual-clutch transmission – designed to optimize clutch engagement for improved drivability and improve vehicle acceleration with the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) on (activated)
* Updated braking system, with more rigid brake lines for improved durability and the brake calipers now carry both the Brembo and Nissan logos
* Suspension retuned with redesigned Bilstein® shocks with a new valve body design and revised spring and damper rates
* Revised wheel color (slightly darker high-luster smoke finish) for the base GT-R’s 20-inch RAYS forged aluminum-alloy wheels
* New near-black metallic wheel finish for the GT-R Premium model (the smoke wheel finish comes with the Cold Package)
* One new color, Pearl White, is offered and the Super Silver exterior color has been enhanced and now includes a polished front bumper
* Revised compound for the Dunlop summer tires
* Standard front seat-mounted and roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags

2010 Nissan 370Z Roadster
The all-new 2010 Nissan 370Z Roadster joined the 370Z Coupe and new NISMO 370Z in Nissan showrooms nationwide in September 2009. The Z® Roadster, like the Z® Coupe, offers an unmatched balance of dynamic performance, sculptured styling, innovative technology and exceptional value.

Based on the current generation 370Z Coupe (introduced in January 2009), the Z® Roadster shares its engine, transmissions, suspension, platform and most major components with the popular and exceptionally well-reviewed Z® Coupe. The list of cutting edge technology includes the standard 332-horsepower 3.7-liter DOHC V6 engine with Variable Valve Event and Lift Control (VVEL), choice of 7-speed automatic transmission or close-ratio 6-speed manual with available SynchroRev Match™ (the world’s first synchronized downshift rev matching manual transmission), refined 4-wheel independent suspension, 4-wheel vented disc brakes (with available Nissan Sport Brakes) and lightweight yet rigid body structure.

The Z® Roadster departs from the Z® Coupe with its exclusive, available high back net seats, added structural body reinforcements and convertible top. The 370Z Roadster’s standard power automatic latching top was designed with an emphasis on three key areas: to provide a sleek silhouette matching the new Z®’s stunning styling with the top up or down, to offer easy single-action open-close operation, and to provide an enjoyable top-down experience with reduced wind turbulence and all-climate driver/passenger comfort.

Other features include standard Nissan Intelligent Key™ with Push Button Start and available heating and cooling ventilated net seats, Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System, satellite radio and advanced Nissan Navigation System.

The 2010 370Z Roadster is offered in two models: 370Z Roadster and 370Z Touring Roadster.

2010 Nissan NISMO 370Z
The all-new, second generation NISMO Z®, which went on sale in June 2009, offers unique performance and design attributes that true sports car enthusiasts are looking for – straight from the factory. The NISMO 370Z features 350 horsepower and 276 lb-ft of torque, racing-inspired exterior and interior styling, a specially tuned suspension and special super-lightweight forged alloy wheels.

The NISMO 370Z’s standard 3.7-liter DOHC V6 engine with Variable Valve Event and Lift Control (VVEL) combines with a refined 4-wheel independent suspension and advanced FM (Front Midship) platform to offer responsive performance and handling. The NISMO Z®’s exclusive H-configured exhaust system design, muffler tuning and optimized ECM (Engine Computer Module) control help provide responsive upper end power.

As expected of a true performance machine, the NISMO 370Z is offered with only one transmission – a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission with standard “SynchroRev Match,” the world’s first synchronized downshift rev matching manual transmission (which allows perfectly matched heel-toe-like downshifting).

The NISMO 370Z also features a NISMO-branded strut tower brace for enhanced body rigidity and a pair of performance dampers to manage road-input vibrations and help contribute to the NISMO 370Z’s high levels of stability and performance feel. The NISMO-tuned suspension includes special springs and stabilizer bars. Unique 5-spoke 19-inch RAYS forged aluminum-alloy wheels are mounted with Yokohama ADVAN Sport Y-rated high-performance tires. Nissan Sport Brakes and a Viscous Limited-Slip Differential (VLSD) are also standard on all NISMO 370Zs.

Along with its standout performance, the new NISMO Z® stands out from the crowd with its dramatic performance-oriented exterior and interior. The functional and fully integrated aerodynamic body pieces include an extended front nose with a canard design at each corner for improved downforce and a fully integrated chin spoiler. Special side sills and a unique rear bumper help control airflow under the vehicle, while the functional rear spoiler also increases downforce.

The interior includes NISMO logo seats with black and red fabric and red stitching, a NISMO tachometer, steering wheel with smooth leather and red parallel stitching, smooth leather-wrapped shift knob and aluminum trimmed pedals. A serialized plaque of authenticity is also matched to each NISMO Z®, identifying its unique serial and model year designation. There are no changes for the 2010 NISMO 370Z from the 2009 model.

2010 Nissan 370Z Coupe

Nissan Announces First Fuel Cell Vehicle Lease in North America; “Coca-Cola Zero®” X-TRAIL FCV Promotes Zero Emissions
Tuesday, November 24, 2009
Posted by: Matt

11.24.2009 , SACRAMENTO, Calif.

Nissan North America, Inc. (NNA) today announced the lease of an X-TRAIL Fuel Cell Vehicle (FCV) to Sacramento Coca-Cola Bottling Co., Inc. Nissan, which began development of fuel cell vehicle technology in 1996, has previously used FCVs in demonstration fleets in Japan and in California through the California Fuel Cell Partnership (CaFCP), but this is Nissan’s first commercial FCV lease in North America. The Sacramento Coca-Cola lease is for one year, with an option for two additional years.

“Sacramento already has the beginning of a hydrogen infrastructure in place, and Sacramento Coca-Cola has a track record of utilizing low emissions cars, so the two companies share a green philosophy as well as a common love of things ‘zero’,” said Eric Noziere, vice president, Corporate Planning, NNA.

The zero emissions X-TRAIL FCV will be used by the bottler for sales calls and public events in the Sacramento area in promotion of its Coca-Cola Zero® soft drink. “This is a big step in furthering our commitment to environmental sustainability,” said Bob Brown, executive vice president of Sacramento Coca-Cola. “We are really excited about the promise of fuel cell technology.”

Nissan’s comprehensive fuel cell research and development program is part of a range of eco-friendly technologies – including FCVs, electric vehicles, hybrid and improved internal combustion engines – being pursued under the Nissan Green Program 2010, a plan focused on developing new technologies, products and services leading to real-world reductions in CO2 emissions, cleaner emissions and expanded recycling of resources.

The Nissan X-TRAIL FCV is based on the X-TRAIL SUV, which is available in Mexico, Japan and Europe. It is fitted with a Nissan-developed compact fuel cell stack, a compact Lithium-ion battery and a high-pressure hydrogen storage cylinder. Performance is close to that of a similarly sized internal combustion engine-based vehicle. Versions of this generation X-TRAIL FCV are capable of speeds in excess of 95 miles per hour, with a cruising range of up to 300 miles.

Sacramento-based Nissan X-TRAIL FCVs have already logged nearly 300,000 miles in ongoing internal tests, with one vehicle very close to the 100,000-mile mark. “The future of sustainable mobility will depend on the simultaneous development of many technologies. Test programs like Sacramento Coca-Cola X-TRAIL FCV lease help us keep our momentum going in this arena, even as we’re getting ready to roll out the new Nissan LEAF electric vehicle in the next year,” said Noziere.

In addition to the current generation X-TRAIL FCV, Nissan earlier this year announced testing of a next-generation fuel cell stack that is 25 percent smaller than the current model and will be less expensive to build. Nissan North America recently opened a new Fuel Cell Laboratory at the Nissan Technical Center in Farmington Hills, Mich. The new lab will support other global Nissan research centers and will work with suppliers and universities on various related fuel cell projects.

“Any 5th grade math student can tell you that 0+0+0=0, yet in this case zero (carbs) plus zero (calories) plus zero (emissions) adds up to a great partnership and a great way to promote both the Nissan and Coca-Cola Zero® brands,” added Noziere.

“We are delighted to have this opportunity to team up with Nissan to employ zero-emissions technology in a real life business setting,” said Don Quinn, Director of Operations for Sacramento Coca-Cola. “What better way to showcase zero-emissions technology than with North America’s most popular new zero-calorie soft drink?”

Nissan LEAF Zero-Emission Tour kicks off in Los Angeles

The Renault-Nissan Alliance today announced that Nissan and Reliant Energy of Houston, Texas, one of the major competitive electricity providers in the nation, have forged an agreement to advance zero-emission mobility in the United States. The announcement helps pave the way for the 2010 introduction of Nissan LEAF, the industry’s first all-electric, zero-emission car designed for the mass market. The company expects to begin sales in late 2010. Reliant is a subsidiary of NRG Energy, Inc. (NYSE: NRG), one of the largest electricity generators in the United States.

Nissan President and CEO Carlos Ghosn announced the agreement today at the kickoff of the Nissan LEAF Zero-Emission Tour, at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, marking the first North American appearance of Nissan LEAF.

The vehicle debut was followed by a panel discussion representing the key interests of the environmental, energy and air-quality communities. Participants included Ghosn, Mary D. Nichols, Chairman, California Air Resources Board; David Crane, President & CEO, NRG Energy, of which Reliant is a subsidiary; and Patricia Monahan, Deputy Director, Clean Vehicles Program and Director of the California Office, Union of Concerned Scientists.

“The Renault-Nissan Alliance has committed to becoming a global leader in zero emissions,” said Ghosn, who also is chairman and CEO of Renault. “Together, Nissan and Reliant Energy share the vision that electric vehicles offer the best solution to reducing CO2 emissions. The Nissan LEAF is the only all-electric, zero-emission vehicle that will be available to drivers on a mass-market scale and at an affordable price.”

As part of the agreement, Nissan and Reliant Energy will develop plans to promote a charging infrastructure for electric cars that encourages home and workplace charging, as well as a public charging infrastructure. The companies will work to coordinate the establishment of policies and help streamline charging infrastructure deployment. Nissan also has agreed to make available a supply of electric vehicles to Reliant and in its areas of operation.

“This agreement with Nissan is another part of our comprehensive effort to speed up the adoption of broad-based electric-powered transportation ecosystem,” said David Crane, CEO of NRG.

“We can now see a clear path to having thousands – even hundreds of thousands – of zero-emission vehicles on Texas roads in the next several years,” said Jason Few, President of Reliant Energy.

The Los Angeles debut marked the first stop on a nationwide tour of LEAF. The Nissan LEAF Zero-Emission Tour will make stops in 22 cities, in 11 states, the District of Columbia, and Vancouver, Canada, offering the opportunity for interested drivers, media, civic partners, businesses and university students to learn more about Nissan LEAF and the benefits of zero-emission driving. Los Angeles-area stops also include Santa Monica, Glendale and the University of Southern California campus. Details can be found at www.nissanusa.com/leaf-electric-car.

Nissan, along with alliance partner Renault, is the only automaker committed to making all-electric vehicles available to the mass market on a global scale. Through the Nissan LEAF Zero-Emission Tour, Nissan will be showcasing the electric vehicle and battery technology as well as the company’s zero-emission mobility objectives. Nissan is also furthering the development of an electric-vehicle infrastructure through agreements with the State of Tennessee, the State of Oregon, Sonoma County, San Diego, Phoenix, Tucson, Washington D.C., Seattle, Raleigh, Vancouver, and Mexico City.
