Overview:
If you own an S13, chances are you have encountered problems with the door panel covers at some point. They can be a pain to replace with OEM units, causing some owners to simply switch out the entire panel. Replacing the fabric/upholstery of the affected section can actually be quite simple and cheap!
Difficulty: **
Time: 1 hour
Cost: less than $20 depending on materials
Tools:
Scissors
Exacto-Knife
Pen w/ lid
Materials:
Strong adhesive spray
super-glue
Fabric of your choice (make sure to get enough!)
Procedure:
First, remove the old, rotten cover from your door panel. It may take some pressure, but be careful as you can actually tear and stretch the underlying vinyl/plastic stuff behind it. This can be done my hand or by using a plastic table knife to help you separate the old adhesive.
Second, use either the old cover or the space on the door panel as a template to get the shape and size of your new cover. Trace the outline and the holes that will need to be cut for the handles and power locks/window controls in the new fabric.
A little excess around the edges wont hurt as it can be trimmed later or covered with piping if desired.
After your fabric is cut, mask of the area surrounding the base of your new cover and coat the panel with the spray adhesive. Make sure to get enough on the door without causing runs or gloopy buildup.
Carefully apply your new fabric using even pressure. Allow the glue to dry and clean up the edges. Install your piping by using a thin bead of glue and pressing it into the groove with a pen.
Re-install your handles and controls and prepare to catch all manner of odd looks and compliments from your friends!
