S14 seat belts in a S13: How To

Start by removing the entire s13 front seat belt system as you will need some the bolt holes to install the s14 belts. Then install the s14 reel in the location of the stock power motors, the s14 belt reel is a bit shorter and a simple bracket needs to be made to secure the top of the assembly.

The other end of the belt needs to be anchored to the floor using one of the bolt holes of the old lap belt. A small hole needs to be cut in the carpet for the bolt to pass through.

Next the upper plastic needs to be modified to allow for the belt and top pivot point. I get the hole started with a drill then pop the plastic back into place. With the bolt in the top location underneath the hole I finish widening out the hole with an exacto blade to get it right on spot. You also need to make a slot for the belt to pass through. I cut 2 slits then heat the plastic with a torch and bend it back holding it while it cools with something that isn’t your hands

this is on a hatch but I’ve done the same on a coupe and it isn’t much different.

Another shot of the plastic:

Next get some new hardware for the upper pivot point. I got 7/16 fine thread (20) grade 8 hardware at a local store. 2 1/2 inches long. One washer per side, 3 7/16 spacers for each side and a tube that just fits around the bolt so the belt can pivot once the bolt is tight. I expanded a slightly smaller tube but maybe you can find something better.

A shot of the new hardware assembled without the belt on it.

I am sure some people will be concerned about putting a longer bolt in this location but I am quite comfortable with the grade 8 hardware. Also it looks so much better than hacking up your stock plastic. It is also much easier than trying to find jdm or Canadian plastics.

Assemble the hardware with the seat belt over the sleeve and put it through the hole in the plastic you made. Put your plastic back together and enjoy your new belts and weight loss.
