The Adaptive Front Lighting System directs the headlamps to provide for best road illumination using vehicle speed and steering wheel angle inputs. Please see the details below for a more detailed description:

During operation, the left hand (driver side) headlamp operates differently than the right hand (passenger side) headlamp.

The AFS LH (driver’s side) low beam:

  • Has a maximum swivel angle of 20 degrees.
  • Begins turning the lamp at a steering wheel angle of approximately 20 degrees.
  • Reaches full angle operation at a steering wheel angle of 90-115 degrees (amount depends on vehicle speed).
  • Begins to turn at a speed about 16 mph (25 km/h).
  • Stops turning below 3 mph (5 km/h).
  • Is limited by vehicle speed to reduce the chance of the headlight annoying oncoming drivers.

The AFS RH (passenger’s side) low beam:

  • Has a maximum swivel angle of 9 degrees.
  • Begins turning the lamp at a steering wheel angle of approximately 60 degrees.
  • Reaches full angle operation at a steering wheel angle of 99-139 degrees (amount depends on vehicle speed).
  • Operates at all vehicle speeds, including when stopped, except it will not turn at all when transmission is in “P” or “R” range.

NOTE: When the engine is started, both the left and right hand side low beams turn to the most inside position then return to their original position.

NOTE(2): The AFS can be turned ON or OFF by the system switch located on the dash, to the left of the steering column.
