INFINITI CARS

G20
Hailed as one of the best entry level luxury cars of the time, the G20 held many of Nissan’s firsts. This was Infiniti’s first entry level luxury car, the first of the legendary G series, and Nissan’s first multi-link front suspension. The G20 could be had fully loaded with Bose stereo, four wheel disc brakes & ABS, fold down rear seats, a five speed transmission, high revving engine, and a powered moonroof. These packages in the luxury market were unheard of compared to the typical, and expensive a la carte options from the German manufacturers. The G20 would soldier on for a second generation and receive significant upgrades. The multi-link rear independent suspension from the Maxima would be adopted, as well as automatic climate control and a limited slip differential.
G35 / G37 / Q40
The G35 was Infiniti’s successor for three models – The I35, J30, and G20. The new G had all of the bases covered. It was available in coupe and sedan body styles, and could also be equipped with all wheel drive and the first application of Nissan’s ATTESA all wheel drive system. ATTESA allows the G to be rear wheel drive while cruising at a steady speed and all wheel drive while beginning to accelerate – and when traction wasn’t available to the rear wheels, torque would automatically be sent to the front wheels.

The nearly 50-50 weight distribution, available six speed transmission, Brembo brakes, limited slip differential, and mid mounted 260 horsepower engine made for a chassis that handled well and had the power to back it up.

The G35 was succeeded by the G37. Many of the components were shared, but the driving dynamics were improved. The engine would now make 328 horsepower, with an available seven speed automatic transmission, 4 piston front brakes & 2 piston rear brakes (sport models), paddle shifters (G37S model), and a viscous limited slip differential. The G37 is available as a coupe, sedan, and convertible.

Additionally, there is a sportier option for the G series named the G37 IPL. IPL stands for Infiniti Performance Line. The engine received a bump in horsepower, suspension revisions, and sportier body styling.

In 2010, one other option also became available in the G model line. The introduction of the G25 uses a smaller displacement V6, an automatic transmission, is available with rear wheel or all wheel drive and is otherwise identical to the G37.

The Q40 debuted in 2015. While it was originally supposed to be replaced by the Q50, Infiniti kept the [formerly G37] around as the renamed Q40 because of continued demand. One of Infiniti’s top sellers, the Q40 got a big price cut and represents Infiniti’s entry-level offering.

Q50 / Q60
Don’t let Infiniti’s previous use of alphanumeric nomenclature fool you, the Q50 is not the size of a Q and is not equipped with a 5 liter engine. Instead, the Q50 is the successor for the adored G37. The new model is more shapely and sleek and is available in a number of flavors. Available model options are rear wheel drive and all wheel drive, a lower powered 328 horsepower V6 engine, and a 360 horsepower V6 engine for hybrid models.

The Q50 contains many of Infiniti’s firsts: a drive by wire steering system, DAS – Direct Adaptive Steering (an industry first), a dual screen infotainment system (separation of climate control, navigation, safety features, and audio) which will help keep the necessities closer to hand, and an available turbo four cylinder and diesel option.

I30 / I35
The Infiniti I30 was the brand’s best seller until the G model successor; and for plenty of good reasons. The sleek styled mid-size model shared mechanical underpinnings with the Maxima but was unique in appearance. The I30 undercut the German luxury competition while being equipped with similar safety features and creature comforts, at a much more favorable price point and superior reliability. There were two trim levels available, the standard I30 and the I30t. The “t” designates a touring model with came with a limited slip differential, HID headlights, and the option to equip the sport package. In 2001, the model was renamed as the I35 due to the introduction of a larger displacement engine which bumped horsepower to 255.
J30
The J30 was Infiniti’s mid-size luxury car and positioned between the G20 and Q45. The rounded body style was unique for the market at the time and stood out against the competition. The interior was nicely appointed with two tone contrasting colors, real wood, automatic climate control, eight way powered seats, and Bose stereo. Mechanically, the J30 had all of the right touches- an outstanding interior, rear wheel drive, the V6 adapted from the 300zx which churned out 210 horsepower, a multi-link rear suspension with a limited slip rear differential- a favorite upgrade of the 240sx crowd, and HICAS, a four wheel steering system. The J30 was phased out of production and replaced with the front wheel drive I30 and I35.
M30
The Infiniti M30 was produced from 1989 through 1992 and has a strong enthusiast community. The M30 was originally equipped with the V6 engine from the 300zx and churned out 162 horsepower and the only transmission available was automatic. The suspension could be changed from “sport” to “comfort.” The M30 was Infiniti’s first convertible unti the G37 convertible in 2009. Many owners within the Nissan Infiniti community opt to modify or replace the engine, transmission, and differential for a more potent luxury car.
M35 - M37 - M45 - M56
The original M45 is an understated vehicle in every way. While the styling wasn’t particularly striking, the power, speed, and interior of the car was outstanding. These features translated into a 340 horsepower highway speedster that took you to cruising in the triple digits while seated in the lap of luxury – without garnering extra attention from law enforcement the way other performance sedans do. Equipped with 10 way heated and cooled memory seats, intelligent cruise control, dual climate control, side curtain air bags, and real wood trim, the interior, performance, and safety features were impressive. However, after two years (2003 / 2004), the model was discontinued due to slow sales, likely due to the styling.

The refreshed M35/45 debuted in 2006. The new car was based on an improved G series platform with optional V6 and V8 engines. Both models are available in all wheel drive and ATTESA. The M45 received a revised multi-link suspension and double wishbone suspension which provides a sporty, comfortable ride. The M received high accolades such as Interior of the Year, a IIHS safety pick, and an award for the fastest production hybrid. The M is currently on its fourth incarnation, and in 2014, Infiniti renamed the lineup of M sedans to “Q70.”

Q45
The Q45 was Infiniti’s flagship sedan for 16 years (1990-2006) – a stylish, full sized luxury sports sedan. It unintentionally became one of industry’s best kept secrets. A surprisingly agile luxury sedan with a torquey (and severely underrated) 278hp 4.5L V8, which was competitive for that era, the Q45 was an upscale “driver’s” car, more of a reasonably priced and reliable alternative to the BMW 7-series or Jaguar XJ, and less soft and cushy than the Lexus LS400. The car quickly caught the eyes of the competition with its low price, high powered VH45DE engine, Bose stereo system, memory seats, contrasting color interior, multi-link suspension, and HICAS 4 wheel steering. The original Q was also a very quick car with a short gear ratios and a 0-60mph of 6.7 seconds.

Sales for the Q were disappointing despite excellent reviews by the press. Some felt the lagging sales were due to its more dramatic, European inspired styling. But many felt it was more due to a controversial advertising campaign during its crucial launch, which excluded pictures of the car or even a description of it. As a result, the Q45 ended up getting compared mostly to the similarly priced (but arguably more reliable) LS400, a car that appealed to a traditional non-sporty luxury car buyer and subsequently created an uphill battle for Infiniti to make the Q’s more driver oriented character better known to the market.

In 1997, the second generation Q45 made a change in direction away from sportiness and more toward luxury. The new body had a more traditional luxury car look and featured a smaller, slightly less powerful 4.1L V8. All of the luxury goodies were there, including some new ones.

The 2002-2006 model years were the highest powered and most luxurious of the Q’s lifespan, with a 340 horsepower engine, sleek styling, 8 way power front and passenger seats. The 3rd generation Q represented a minor shift, but this time back in the sporty direction. In addition to a sleeker looking body, power was now provided by a new 4.5L V8 that pumped out 340hp. The addition of the Sport package added active dampening suspension which allowed the Q to drive like a sporty luxury sedan. But it was not enough to save the Q from extinction. Due to slow sales, the Q45 was superseded by the M35/45.

Q70
In 2014, Infiniti’s revised naming structure dictated that the M37 and M56 would now be designated the Q70. The Q70 is available with two choices of engines, a 330 hp 3.7-liter V6 or a 420 hp 5.6-liter V8. The 3.7 is also available in all-wheel drive, and a hybrid powertrain is available as well.

Boasting top rankings in the IIHS safety ratings, and arguably one of the more handsome cars in its class, Infiniti added a new long-wheelbase (Q70L) version in 2015.

INFINITI CROSSOVERS AND SUVS

EX35 - EX37
The Infiniti EX series is an entry level luxury crossover SUV based on the acclaimed G platform. Due to its size and handling characteristics, some have even gone as far as to call it the G35 hatchback. Thanks to a lower center of gravity than most CUVs in the market, a 295 horsepower engine, seven speed automatic transmission, and the option of all wheel drive or rear wheel drive, owners receive some of the best value in the segment.

There are many technological and safety options available, such as lane departure warning, lane departure prevention, blind spot warning, Bose stereo, an updated version of ATTESSA, memory seats , and a barrage of curtain and side airbags. The EX35/37 is a graduated G37 loaded with enjoyable luxurious extras.

FX35 - FX37 - FX45 - FX50
The Infiniti FX series was the successor to the QX4 midsized luxury SUV, but it went in a vastly different direction. It was more of stylish, luxury crossover with a sporty edge. Sharing its platform with the Nissan 350Z instead of a Pathfinder, the aggressively styled FX was more of a fun-to-drive street machine than offroad-capable SUV. The FX was offered with both RWD and AWD versions. The FX35 had the 300hp 3.5L V6 motor from the 350Z with a five-speed automatic tranny that featured a manumatic shift mode. The pricier FX45 used a more powerful 4.5 liter V8, but both were equipped with same Infiniti luxury touches.

The next generation FX came out in the 2009 model year. The better selling V6 version remained the FX35, but the V8 model was renamed FX50, due to an engine change to a new 5.0L V8, which put out close to 400 hp, and a smoother shifting 7 speed automatic transmission. The exterior looks were softened a bit, the interior was upgraded in design and material, and the suspension was upgraded improving what was already a pretty good ride with decent handling. A minor facelift followed in 2012. But in 2014, Infiniti renamed its entire product line using the letter Q plus 2 digit multiples of 10. So the FX37 and FX50 became the QX70.

QX70
Infiniti’s replacement for both the FX37 and the FX50, the QX70 stands out in a crowd of boring crossovers.  A hot-rod 325-hp 3.7-liter V-6 and a seven-speed automatic with either rear-drive or all-wheel drive gets the QX70 hustling with a memorably-aggressive exhaust note that goes right along with the QX70’s sporty handling.
QX4
The Infiniti QX4 is a midsized AWD SUV that was sold in the US between 1997 and 2003. This was the Infiniti brand’s first SUV offering in the US market. The differences between the QX4 and the Nissan Pathfinder upon which it was based were mostly cosmetic, with an upgraded interior. But the combination of the Pathfinder’s off-road capability, Infiniti luxury features, and reasonable price made the QX4 a smart choice for the near-luxury SUV market. The QX4’s 168 hp V6 was not powerful, but it was smooth and reliable. the SUV received a much needed power bump in the 2000 model year to 240hp when they switched to the 3.5L V6. Although it was only offered with an automatic transmission, it did come equipped with low range gearing.
QX56
The QX56 is a full sized luxury AWD SUV that went on sale in the US market in 2004. It was the first Infiniti SUV to be built in the US. The first generation QX56 was based on the Nissan Armada, which also shared a platform with the Nissan Titan pickup truck. the luxury laden SUV had one engine choice, a 5.6L V8 that mated to a 5 speed automatic with overdrive, churning out 320hp. The QX56 could also tow a competitive 9,000 lbs, while maintaining a high level of quality. Gas mileage suffered a bit due to its prowess and weight, averaging 12-14 mpg. The next generation QX56 appeared in 2011 where it switched away from the Armada platform, and shared its underpinnings with the slightly bigger Nissan Patrol, a model never before offered in the US. It also sported a brand new 5.6L V8 with a power increase to 400hp, plus a new 7 speed sequential shift automatic. This resulted in a towing capacity bump of 500 lbs. In 2014, Infiniti renamed their entire product line to “Q” and “QX” plus 2 digit multiples of 10, so the QX56 will become the QX80.
QX50
The Infiniti QX50 is clearly the sports car of compact luxury crossovers, and while it might seem like a new model, it’s already been in the lineup for seven years as the EX35. Despite the fact that the platform is aging (the QX50 shares underpinnings with the ever-popular Q50 sedan), the sedan-like driving dynamics are impressive, and this is a crossover for someone who wanted a sports car but needs a place for two kids and their stuff.

Infiniti’s smallest luxury crossover is still a practical size, and still turns heads – but where the QX50 really shines is on the interior – a perennial favorite among journalists. It’s flush with ornate details, rich colors and loads of technological toys befitting a vehicle twice its price.

QX60
Previously known as the JX35, Infiniti’s revised naming structure gives us the QX60. The premium crossover shares platforms with the all-new Pathfinder. Infiniti’s three-row crossover is a spacious, luxurious environment with seating for seven. The dashboard and center console are a near-match to that of the Infiniti Q70 sedan.

Infiniti sticks with their ubiquitous 3.5-liter V6 with 265 horsepower, providing adequate acceleration. Front wheel drive is standard, with an all wheel drive model available for folks in snow and ice areas. The QX60 Hybrid is powered by a supercharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder, along with an electric motor to produce a combined 250 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque, but fuel economy is almost identical to the V6 model.

QX70
The radically aggressive QX70 takes Infiniti into its second decade of building the most unique and recognizable sport luxury crossover on the road. Available with a 5.0-liter V8 (for 2014) or the 3.7-liter V6 that has been a staple of the Infiniti lineup for quite some time, the QX70 makes up for its lack of utilitarian function with driving excitement. If you prefer your crossover to feel like a luxury musclecar with a lift kit, you’re most likely a QX70 fan.

From the 2014 model, everything carried over for the 2015 model year… except the previously available 5.0-liter V8. All 2015 Infiniti QX70 models come equipped with the 3.7-liter V6 that develops 325 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. A seven-speed automatic with a manual shift feature is the only transmission offered. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional. We’d take the QX70 with all-wheel drive and the 3.7-liter, which moves the big Infiniti 0-60 in just over 6 seconds. The downshift rev matching function adds to the driving enjoyment, especially in twisty roads and when darting through suburbia.

QX80
The QX80 is a full sized luxury AWD SUV that replaced the outgoing QX56 model, which was based on the Nissan Patrol, a model never before offered in the US. It also sported a brand new 5.6L V8 with a power increase to 400hp, plus a new 7 speed sequential shift automatic. This resulted in a towing capacity bump of 500 lbs. In 2014, Infiniti renamed their entire product line to “Q” and “QX” plus 2 digit multiples of 10. So the QX56 became the “QX80.”

What is a Factory Service Manual?

If you plan to do your own work on your Infiniti, whether it be routine maintenance or more in-depth projects, you’ll want to have access to a Factory Service Manual (FSM). These manuals are significantly more accurate than a Haynes or Chiltons manual, since the information is developed by the manufacturer to be used by factory-trained technicians.

Click to read –> How To Use an Infiniti Factory Service Manual

Inside each FSM, you’ll find repair information that the dealer-trained service technicians use everyday. While the FSM is intended for professionally-trained technicians with high levels of automotive experience and skill, don’t let that scare you. Even if you’re not an advanced do-it-yourself owner, we’re here to help.

Another benefit of having an FSM on hand is that occasionally, reference will be made to special tools and other information uniquely known by the dealership service centers, as well as additional troubleshooting tips, routine maintenance hints, and model-specific repair information.

Should I buy an Infiniti FSM?
Don’t be fooled into buying a digital copy on CD from auction sites like eBay. We provide our members access to the same factory-published FSM for free. [NOTE: These pdf files are marked for identification. Any reselling of these documents WILL be reported to eBay and Nissan!]

When you’re ready to begin your project, find the appropriate section of the FSM, and print the relevant pages you will need. This way, you’ll have it at your fingertips in the garage for easy and quick reference.

Cool! How can I thank you enough?
While you’re completing your project, take pictures as you go, and write up the process. Send it over to us at webmaster@nicoclub.com, and we’ll convert it to an article so that everyone can benefit from it for years to come.
