Z32: Projector Lens Cleaning

December 21, 2009 by Greg

This may work on other cars as well, but I’ve only tested it on the Z32.

The inside of the projector lens on the Z32 low beams gets dirty over time.  If they’ve never been cleaned, that’s 15+ years of dirt and grime reducing your light output.  Here’s a simple method to restore light to your night driving experience.

2′ spring loaded grabber tool

This tool works wonders for projector cleaning, and many other tasks around the car.  I took a 1/2 paper towel, folded 4 times (till about 2″x2″) stuck my finger in the middle and grabbed it with the grabber. Then fold the towel over the grabber end, and spray with Stoner’s Invisible Glass (Or another ammonia-free glass cleaner).

No need to remove headlight bulb mount (4 screw metal thing) just stick it in the hole left by the bulb, get past the plastic transition, and wiggle around, you can watch the cleaning through the front. With a head-mounted LED light you can easily see areas you missed when cleaning. Repeat for the other side, reinstall bulbs and enjoy your “new” headlights!  This is also a must-do before installing HID bulbs in the factory housings.
