Need help with holiday shopping? Look no further!

Some of you may remember a couple years ago, we did a series of reviews on a few must-have garage-related goodies from the MYCHANIC catalog of products… Since then, a lot has changed, including an expanded lineup of solutions to improve that garage experience.

Fast forward a few years, and now MYCHANIC is called Urban Transit. Their driving goal remains the same: to enhance the time we spend in the garage. To that end, their team of creative engineers develop accessories and tools that are intentionally designed and skillfully crafted – basically, to design solutions that THEY would use in their own garage.

We reconnected with the team from Urban Transit this year to see what they’ve been working on… and conveniently, it comes at a perfect time to get some holiday shopping going for that gearhead in your life, so let’s get to it!

The first product is actually a revision on a previous release, and we’re bringing it to you before it’s even been released for sale: The previous generation POD Light has been a favorite tool here at Datsun Ranch.

A simple concept, really: An LED light in a spherical housing with a magnetic base. Now, there’s no shortage of task lighting solutions for the garage, but we all have our favorite solutions, and this one seems to come in handy more often than not. In fact, I used mine a few days ago to repair a damaged dryer vent. Magnetically attached to the back of the dryer, aimed where I need it, with plenty of light to complete the task.

Urban Transit actually improved on the design, though. The new release is not just magnetic, and rotating, but rechargeable, and dare I say, a bit brighter than the one I’ve been using. Sure, the shop has a lot of light, but unfortunately, that light actually makes shadowy areas darker (such as an engine bay). Simply attach the base to a metal surface in any position (it even sticks to the underside of a car hood). Here it is lighting the way for me to replace a coolant temp sensor on the Roadster:

The foam surface is non-marring, so you could attach it to a pristine painted surface without fear of scratching. Rotate the housing to aim the light right where you want it, and get to work!

I’m stoked to put this one to work some more, and I’ll retire the battery-powered POD light to the utility room for emergency use. Either way, the team at Urban Transit has a winner on its hands with the POD light, and we’ll update this article once it’s ready for sale.
