Round 1, 2005 champ Kazama kicks the season off with a big win at Irwindale, and as always, NICO was there covering the action.

Special thanks to our very own Justin "Bling" Derendal of http://www.JDActionPhoto.com for clicking some KILLER pics!!!

D1 kicked its 2006 series off here in California with the Round 1. 15,000 fans gathered from across the United States to witness the finest level of drifting. 2005 Champion Yasuyuki Kazama took first place in this event to start the season off right. Kazama has been a consistent Irwindale winner since 2004 when he tasted his first victory here in the states. Following season opener in 2005 he again battled his way to the top and took first again.

In December of 2005 D1 held its annual USA vs JAPAN exhibition event at Irwindale, where for the first time Kazama was knocked out of the brackets in the first round by JR Gittin an American driver. Later that night Gittin proved to be the winner and made history as the first American to win a D1 event. A win well deserved.

With disheartening memories fresh from a couple months ago, Kazama made his way to Irwindale to redeem himself and to prove that he is still on top. Defeating fan favorites like Ken Nomura, and the infamous Team Orange (Kazuhiro Tanaka and Nobushige Kumakubo) he worked his way to the top and claimed his victory making this win a threepeat.

Also, American driver Samuel Hubinette ran beautifully in practice and in competition with top entry speeds and earning top points in qualifying. Hubinette piloting the Dodge Viper SRT-10 was penalized in the semifinals as he false started in his first run in his match against Kumakubo. With his last chance to recover his momentum, Hubinette spins on the final corner forfeiting his chance for the finals.

2006 West Coast Shootout, Phoenix, AZ

TV COVERAGE JUNE 27TH, 2006 10:30PM EDT ON SPEEDTV

I seem to start every article I write with the same word...WOW! But that is simply the only way to describe the weekend. It seems that every event we throw, it gets better and better.

This year we started the season off right where we did last year, in Phoenix, AZ, for the 2nd annual NDRA opening race at Firebird International Raceway.

Amazingly, for the 2nd year in a row, the rain came in and delayed the racing. What are the chances? Two visits to the desert in 2 years, and it rains both times. Of course, the jet engine heaters the track has took care of the wet track with no problem, and racing continued.

Although the racing was entertaining this year, it was nothing compared to last year. There simply was not enough competition this year. However that didn't matter, because the car show turnout was even better and more spectacular than last year. NICO truly shined, along with AZ350Z club, by having the largest attendance NOPI has ever seen at an event outside of the NOPI Nationals.

Greg (AZhitman) prevailed once again with the return of the chin ferret. So many of the attendees were new, but they were welcomed into the fold just like family. It was great to see these new faces enjoying themselves, NICO style. NICOmom (Stacey) was the hottest grillemistress in town, serving up over 250 hamburgers and 200 hot dogs to the hungry faithful, and everyone we met had a smile on their face.

There is no greater feeling than seeing the way NICO throws down at an event, and we're incredibly appreciative of our relationship with NOPI, the kings of import lifestyle events.

Once again, NICO spent Sunday with the media, doing many interviews, as well as having many photo shoots with our models. We'll be featured on SpeedVision later this year. The NICO Girls (Cherie, Ami, Angelique, Aurora and Melissa) were a huge attraction, and were invited on stage to dance for the crowd. NICO's representation was in full effect, with Nissans outnumbering ANY other car model in attendance.

Despite Toyota actually PAYING for the first 100 Scion registrations, we had them beat as well... Oh, the humanity!

NICO's very own Blair (Jiinks), George (sil8ty) Roger (Hinga), Justin (Bling) and Champa put on a hell of a drift exhibition for the crowd, with some close calls with the photographers and some destruction on the track - These guys, in the words of a spectator, know how to "tear s*** up". The rain on Sunday prevented further mayhem, but they'll definitely be on a tear next year.

NICO awards were given this year for the following:
Best Nissan - Brian Bush's Turbo Altima (ultimatuc)
Runner-up Nissan - Bryan Haley's Spec V (05babyGTR)
Best Infiniti - Art's G35 Coupe (Trijicon)
Runner-up Infiniti - David Clark's G35 Coupe (Lil' G Buddy)
Best 350Z - Darren Hild's Widebody Z33 (Intense Motorsports)
Best Z - Dan's LS-1 powered Z32 (Intense Motorsports)
Best 240SX - Ray's gorgeous blue Zenki on gold Volks (Ray)

Additionally, NICO members took home so many NOPI awards that I don't even have a count on them. It seemed that every person that won was part of NICO. Congratulations to all who won an award! Thanks to everyone who attended and is helping make NICO the #1 destination for Nissan enthusiasts on the Web!

NISSAN DEVELOPS DISTANCE CONTROL ASSIST SYSTEM

-- Helps drivers control following distances --

TOKYO (March 15, 2006)—In its ongoing efforts to improve traffic safety, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., today announced the development of Distance Control Assist System, an electronic system that helps drivers control the distance between themselves and the vehicle in front.

The new system is especially useful in heavy traffic when frequent braking is required.

The system is able to determine the following distance of the driver, as well as the relative speed of both cars, using a radar sensor installed in the front bumper. If the driver releases the gas pedal or is not pressing the gas pedal, the system automatically applies the brakes.*1 If the system determines that braking is required, an indicator will appear on the instrument panel and a buzzer will sound simultaneously. The gas pedal will then automatically move upwards to assist the driver in switching to the brakes.

The Distance Control Assist System is the latest innovation developed under Nissan's Safety Shield*2 concept, an accident prevention and management approach based on the idea of “vehicles that help protect people.”

If the driver releases the gas pedal, the system will automatically apply the brakes. The system applies the brakes only when the driver is not pressing the gas pedal.

Safety Shield: Through this concept introduced in 2004, Nissan aims to help create a safe motorized society in which there are no traffic accidents. The company is continuously working to design and engineer safer vehicles and has set a goal of halving by 2015 the number of fatal and serious injuries involving Nissan vehicles as compared to the 1995 level.

Motorex owner jailed, R32 and R34 legalization rescinded
Monday, March 13, 2006
Posted by: AZhitman

According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the owner of Motorex, Nanahoshi Hiroaki, 33, was arrested Thursday and booked into the L.A. County Jail. He is being held on $1 Million bail.

Booking Details

Hiroaki's initial appearance is scheduled for Wednesday of this week.

Hiroaki and Motorex came to the recognition of Nissan enthusiasts in the US as they became the only Registered Importer legally authorized to legalize Skylines for US use. As Motorex was able to comply with stringent US crash-testing requirements, they petitioned the courts to protect their interest in the Skyline market by "locking out" other would-be importers from the list of necessary modifications.

Not only did this give Motorex a corner on the market for legal Skylines, it also allowed them to command a premium price for each legalized car. Motorex-prepped Skylines can fetch upwards of $50,000. While making loads of money, Motorex also made loads of enemies.

According to sources, the lease to the Motorex facility has been overdue for months, and is now locked out by the landlord.

The US Department of Transportation has offically rescinded importation eligibility for both the R32 and R34 Skylines, only 96-98 R33 Skylines are still eligible to be imported.

Stay tuned - We'll keep you updated on the latest news as it becomes available.
